How the Brain Works... And Ethiopian Musicians

I heard an interview on Fresh Air today with the author of Connectome: How the Brain's Wiring Makes Us Who We Are. The conversation was pretty interesting, and I know many of us adoptive moms wish we knew more about the human brain, how it works, and perhaps why our kids' brains are the way they are. Sounds like this book might be able to shed at least a little bit of light on that. I'm adding it to my Amazon wish list!

HERE's a link to the radio interview too!

Also, on Here and Now (yes, I listen to a lot of NPR), I heard a rerun of an interview with Ethiopian-born musician Meklit Hadero. She is starting auditions in April of 2012 for her Nile Project, which you can learn more about in the video below. I was very interested in her story as she is a woman that was born in Ethiopia, but raised in the states, and didn't really start connecting with her Ethiopian roots till pretty recently. I wonder is my children might feel a connection with her story? Her music is more jazz/folk sounding than Ethiopian, but perhaps my kids might decide they like her music too? She has a beautiful voice!

  1. Amy,

You should check out the Brain Science Podcast. Lots of great stuff there!

You also might like Daniel Siegel's Mindsight. And anything by Peter Levine, Pat Ogden, Babette Rothschild, and Robert Scaer. Not specifically brain-oriented, but good and very relevant to trauma.

Adding Connectome to my wish list - thanks! (ha, like I need another book on my reading list, lol)
